Are you concerned about security at your store or house?  Have you considered hiring a private security company?  If so you have probably had to try and decide which security company to hire.  Most big cities will have many different companies to choose from.  Each company will have its own benefits and its own draw backs and there will be one out there for you to choose.

First you need to decide what exactly you need from a security company.  Are you looking for a company to protect your business during business hours?  After business hours?  Are you looking for security for a special event?  Maybe you are looking for a protection detail when laying off an employee?  Or are you looking for security for your home?  Each reason for needing a security company will mean that you should look for specific indicators with the company.  Let’s breakdown some of the things you should look for.

Deciding which security company you want to hire during business hours comes down to two different factors: how high risk is your business and what appearance you want to put off. The risk of your business is determined by the type of business you do.  Do you have a lot of high value merchandise or handle a lot of cash?  Maybe you are a construction site looking for a company that has more of a safety focus.

Armed Officers (Level III)

If you are a company that that handles a lot of cash or high value items it is probably a good idea to hire a company that is armed.  A lot of people are worried about the liability when it comes to hiring an armed officer.  When selecting an armed officer you want to make sure of a couple of things.  First, you want to make sure the company is certified by the state to have armed officers and look at the training the officers receive.  Properly trained officers reduce the liability greatly.  Once you have insured that the company provides thorough training you will want to make sure they are insured and bonded.  That way if something does happen the security company assumes the liability.

Tooled Officer (Level II)

If you do not need an armed officer the next step down for your company would be a tooled officer.  These officers are trained in handcuffing, defensive baton, and OC spray.  Sometimes they are even trained in Tasers depending on the needs of the client.   Just like with firearms most states will have a certification process for these tools so that liability is reduced and the officers know what they are doing.

Uniformed Officers (Level I)

A uniformed officer is the lowest level of security that a security company can provide.  These officers are on site to provide a presence and deter crime.  They can also assist in safety issues.  As they are not equipped with any tools they would not be suitable for a position that would require stopping shoplifters.

Uniforms

A major part in deciding what security company to hire is their appearance.  A major part of any security officer’s job is just his presence.    When potential offenders see the officer present they know the site is protected.  A good security company will have professional uniforms that include a badge, standardized pants, and either a polo shirt or button down shirt.  It is best that the uniform looks official like local law enforcement but you don’t want to have a company that looks exactly like law enforcement that may cause issues.  Don’t forget to ask the company how many uniforms they issue each officer.  The best security companies provide officers at least two uniforms in case one uniform gets damaged or dirty.

Hiring and Training

Hiring and training is a big issue in the security world.  If you want the best security company with the least liability and the best officers you are going to want to find a company that only has officers that are certified by the state.  That means that event security companies that don’t get security licenses probably aren’t the best way to go.

Don’t forget to ask the company about how they train their officers.  Whether their officers carry tools or not they should all go through the same basic training.  The best companies train their officers to provide customer service while out in the field.  Also ask who conducts the training.  The best companies will have a trainer specifically tasked with handling all training.  That way training is consistent.

These are just some of the things that you need to look at when looking for the right security company.  Think about how you are going to use the company when you consider these items and more.  There are of course other factors in hiring the right company so don’t hesitate to ask the company any questions you have.  A great company fears no question.
